Standing Stones

ARTIST STATEMENT:

"Standing stones, or menhirs, or megaliths, were placed around Europe and Ireland in the years between 4,000 B.C. and 1500 B.C.  Sometimes twenty feet tall, sometimes in circles or in lines across a field, no one really knows the purpose of these giant stones.  No writing existed at the time, and they were moved about before the wheel or other technology.  Quite possibly the use was spiritual, such as at burial mounds, to mark the transition between this world and the next.  Or, they were used in ceremonial events.  I am intrigued by the power the stones exude, a visceral titanic strength with an aura of mystery.  I began to imagine the stones bound, somewhat anthropomorphically, and I leave it to the viewer to decide if the wrappings are comforting or binding."
